A yantra is a symbolic representation of a deity. Yantras can be invested with energy: yantras are activated by the use of mantras. The combination of mantra and yantra creates an energy field for a specific purpose. Yantras are a form of sacred geometry. Durga is a Hindu goddess known as the mother of the universe. Durga protects all that is good and harmonious. Sitting astride a lion or tiger, Durga battles the forces of evil in the world with her many arms. The name Durga means a "fortress", apropos to Durga's role as a fierce warrior. Durga has nine appellations or forms. Durga has between eight and eighteen arms in most depictions. The purpose of these arms is to battle evil from multiple directions. Her pose and here yantra exemplifies courage and freedom from fear.
